Born in Ontario, Canada, in 1923, Hellyer was first elected
as a member of the Liberal Party during the 1949 federal election.
He became the Minister of National Defence following the
Liberals 1963 election win.
During his time as defence chief he created the Canadian
Forces which unified the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army, and the Royal
Canadian Air Force.
Hellyer made an unsuccessful bid to become the leader of the
party 1968 and subsequently served as Transport Minister and Senior Minister in
the Cabinet.
After falling out with the Liberal Party, he tried and
failed to create his own political party known as Action Canada.
He then joined Progressive Conservative where he was briefly
re-elected again 1972 only to lose his seat two years later.
Hellyer is the longest serving member of the Queen's Privy
Council for Canada which is a group of un-elected consultants which serve the
monarch.
What conspiracy theories does he believe in?
The former government minister is believed to be the
highest-profile politician to openly back the
long-running conspiracy theory.
The 94-year-old said its wealthy members continue to wage
needless wars and focus on profits, rather than helping the planet.
Hellyer told the Lazarus Effect podcast he believes the
group has the technology to reverse the effects of climate change but won't do
so as many of its members are oil industry millionaires.
According to Hellyer, many of its wealthy members are
heavily invested in the oil industry.
"You have a got secret cabal that's actually running
the world and they've managed to keep this technology under wraps until they
can cash in the trillions of oil assets that they've got," he said.
"And it's not going to change until hundreds of
thousands of people band together and say 'look you've got to come clean, tell
us what is going on, and change your priorities to save the world for further
generations instead of blowing it on wars.'"
The ex minister, who is an infamous conspiracy theorist,
also believes "at least four species of aliens" have been visiting
Earth for decades claiming the authorities are constantly in discussions with
extraterrestrial ambassadors.
Hellyer first spoke about his belief that aliens were on
Earth in 1995, and since then has become an authoritative figure in the UFO
community.
He also believes in the eyes of these alien life forms
humans are seen as very primitive.
"Certainly they are more advanced in agriculture and
medicine and many other areas and if that's true why aren't we cooperating with
them to build a better world?" he said.
