(Source: Getty) Paul Hellyer was Canadian Minister of Defence between 1963 and 1967 Born in Ontario, Canada, in 1923, Hellyer was first elected as a member of the Liberal Party during the 1949 federal election. He became the Minister of National Defence following the Liberals 1963 election win. During his time as defence chief he created the Canadian Forces which unified the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army, and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Hellyer made an unsuccessful bid to become the leader of the party 1968 and subsequently served as Transport Minister and Senior Minister in the Cabinet. After falling out with the Liberal Party, he tried and failed to create his own political party known as Action Canada. He then joined Progressive Conservative where he was briefly re-elected again 1972 only to lose his seat two years later.
