US, Canada and Ukraine Vote Against Anti-Nazism Resolution at UN

Image
UN General Assembly’s Third Committee passed a Russia-proposed resolution condemning attempts to glorify Nazism ideology and denial of German Nazi war crimes. The US, Canada and Ukraine were the only countries to vote against it. The resolution  was passed  on Friday by the committee, which is tasked with tackling social and humanitarian issues and human rights abuses, by 115 votes against three, with 55 nations abstaining, Tass news agency reported. The document voiced concern over the rise of racism-driven crimes around the world and the influence that parties with extremist agendas are gaining. It called for a universal adoption of the  International Convention  on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Many nations including the US, the UK, China and India, signed the convention but did not recognize a mechanism resolving individual complaints it establishes, which makes the convention unenforceable in their jurisdictions.   Read more  >>

Virgin Galactic spacecraft designed for commercial space travel crashed

Virgin Galactic says plane designed for commercial space travel was undertaking test flight in California when ‘in-flight anomaly’ occurred An image from video shows wreckage of SpaceShipTwo. Photograph: AP A Virgin Galactic spacecraft crashed after an explosion during a test flight over the Mojave desert on Friday, killing one of the pilots, seriously injuring another and leaving debris scattered over a wide area. The plane, SpaceShipTwo, was undertaking a test flight as part of Sir Richard Branson’s plans for commercial space travel when a “serious anomaly” occurred, the company said. Branson was on his way to the Mojave base on Saturday in the wake of the crash. Witnesses reported the spacecraft broke apart soon after it was detached from the launch plane that carries it to 45,000ft. Rescuers found one of the pilots dead on the ground. The other, who appeared to have deployed an emergency parachute, was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. A comb

'UFO' spotted close to the ISS

Image
'UFO' spotted close to the ISS as astronauts carried out repairs was just glare from the sun, claims expert By JONATHAN O'CALLAGHAN During a spacewalk on 7 October a ‘UFO’ was spotted hovering near the International Space Station (ISS), leading some to suggest Nasa had inadvertently revealed an alien spaceship in orbit. Sadly the answer is much more straightforward, with the smudge being either an speck of dust or a lens flare from the sun. That hasn’t stopped some conspiracy theories arising though, with ufologists somewhat speculatively claiming it was proof that we are not alone in the universe. A ‘UFO’ appeared briefly (shown in red ring) in a Nasa video of a spacewalk on the ISS on 7 October. The sighting led to speculation that it might be an alien spacecraft. But experts have revealed it is just an artefact in the image such as lens flare. 'My guess is that it's an artefact of some sort,' says Professor Andrew Balogh The not

China Poised to Launch Next Moon Mission

Image
China Poised to Launch Next Moon Mission on Thursday By Leonard David, Space.com's Space Insider Columnis China is set to launch a robotic moon mission this week, a "trial by fire" test of re-entry technology for the country's future lunar sample-return efforts. To date there has been little official word on this unmanned mission, which may launch as early as Thursday (Oct. 23). It will apparently send a spacecraft around  the moon ; on its way back toward Earth, the probe will release a capsule to perform a high-speed plunge through the planet's atmosphere. The capsule will parachute onto terra firma to complete its voyage. The soon-to-launch moon probe is based on China's Chang'e 2 lunar orbiter design and modified to carry the re-entry test capsule. The mission, which some China space watchers are calling "Chang'e 5 T1," is to last some nine days. [ Most Awesome Moon Missions of All Time ] Narrow launch windows
